The A-Team Review: The A-Team is A-Plus!

Being an eighties child, it was interesting to hear about The A-Team movie and when it was released, you can bet I was one of the first to go see it. Oddly though, I was one of only a few.

Talking with close friends I realized that while many had heard of Mr. T, the A-Team was an entirely new concept to them. This obviously had an impact on cinema attendance because viewers aren’t sure what it is all about, but think they should because it’s pretty much a cult classic. A case of “embarrassed to admit they aren’t up with the know.” This is one the diehards will have to promote. And with pleasure, I say.

The movie has held true to the original, but made it even better. The A-Team members (or Alpha Team) were recruited by Col. John Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson). A motley crew of guys, they all had dirty backgrounds ranging from car theft and adultery to clinical insanity, but one thing in common – they were all Airborne Rangers. Were. Thanks to a slight hiccup rescuing the chopper pilot, H.M “Howling Mad” Murdock (Sharlto Copley) the new Mr. T, Quentin “Rampage” Jackson (B.A Baracus) ends up with a fear of flying.

Bradley Cooper plays Face (Templeton “Faceman” Peck) and you can see why he’s getting the big roles lately. He pulls off the role to perfection and you can see a definite future for the A-Team if he stays with any future movies. Jessica Biel as Charisa Sosa manages to look professional and ties in well without making it about her. But the real star of the day is Copley. His Murdock is outstandingly hilarious and death-defying, the impressions and accents are just insane and you just can’t wait to see what he does next.

I was like a kid in a candy store I tell you “oooh look at that, I remember that, oh they kept that in!” It was probably lucky the cinema was empty in that case. This is definitely one to watch on the big screen. Probably the only flaw in an otherwise top-notch film is the jumpiness. Switching back and forth from now and then, on a big screen, can get a little disorientating for the uninitiated, for the A-Team masters, the rest makes up ten-fold.
Here’s a re-imagining that didn’t do more harm than good, may even have created a whole new A-Team boom and thoroughly deserves a high rating.
