It’s always hard for a sequel to live up to the first, let alone surpass it, and Iron Man 2 is no exception. While it’s not worse than the previous, it’s nowhere near better either. One consolation, we finally get to see the long awaited kiss. Despite the anticipation building up watching the Iron Man 2 trailers, the action level was not as high as the first, but only just. The storyline managed to redeem the hype without being too lovey-dovey.
Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow continue on as Stark and Potts in the sequel, with the addition of Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman (there is more to this woman than first glance would suggest) replacing Pepper as Tony’s personal assistant – namely because Pepper is now the CEO of Stark Industries. With all the bad things going on in the world, Tony gives up being CEO in his company to focus on being Iron Man full time. His friend, Captain Rhodes (now played by Don Cheadle), has his own suit now, but Senator Stern (Gary Shandling) is playing hardball (and persuasive arguments on both sides) and wants the Iron Man suit. He does manage to get it, but only Tony has the ability to be Iron man.
In typical Tony fashion, he manages to shame a colleague in public so that he later turns to revenge, he gets drunk in the Iron Man suit and has to be restrained by Rhodes, only after he too had been made to don his suit. And he finally gets the girl, or at least a kiss from her. There is worse news for Tony though. The element palladium in the arc reactor keeping him alive has been slowly poisoning him. Without a substitute, soon Tony will die and Iron Man as he is, will be no more. His need to find a better alternative leads him to try and kick start one of his father’s dreams, the Stark Expo, which itself turns up a surprising twist.
Eventually, everything goes to the dogs and it’s up to Tony/ Iron Man to do his thing again and save the world, or his Expo rather from the shamed colleague (Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer) he embarrassed in the early scenes. The movie, while no Great on its own, doesn’t damage a good reputation and is good lead-in promotion for the upcoming Avengers movie. Finally, keep an eye out at the end for a hint to the next movie.
