When I saw the trailer for this installment in the Shrek franchise, I must say I actually got excited. It was great to feel like this about a Shrek movie because it has been too long. DreamWorks first kick started the Shrek franchise off in 2001. Since then, there have been a number of Shrek movies, even a Christmas edition, but this one I think takes the cake.
After living in a castle for a few years, raising little ogre kids and having to do nothing more ogre-ish than sign autographs for the locals, Shrek (Mike Myers) is faced with an ogre version of a mid-life crisis – somewhere between rescuing Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and saving the kingdom of Far, Far Away. Shrek lost his fierceness and he wants it back – but only for a day. And hey presto, here comes Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) to help our green friend out.
Finally, we have a real villain back in the story. While Prince Charming was fine in the last couple, he never really had a chance at it, he was after all Prince Charming and we’re all still waiting for him to get his princess. We saw a villain in Lord Farquaad back in the original, but that was a long time ago and every good story needs a good villain to keep re-appearing in the storyline. Rumpelstiltskin tricks Shrek by granting his wish to return to being just an ogre for one day only, but one day has catastrophic consequences on Shrek’s great day.
For starters, Rumpelstiltskin is now the King of Far, Far Away. Shrek is no longer married to Fiona, in fact Fiona is a freedom fighter who has no idea who Shrek is and instead of being some sort of kingdom celebrity, ogres are now hunted by everyone and Shrek is fighting for his life. And he only has one day to fix it. Madcap adventure and laugh out loud punch lines continue the theme set since the first Shrek.
The movie still has all the great favorites like Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss (Antonio Banderas) to keep the wisecracks coming. The tag team comedy duo keep their hilarious reputation running strong with great timing and material that’s laughs a minute, even though their relationship is nothing like it was before Rumpelstiltskin. This could be the final in the Shrek franchise and to be fair, this is a decent way to go out. One more might just become the nails in the coffin. Overall this movie definitely deserves good rating, and in the words of another cartoon icon, “That’s all folks!”
